Portland lawyer and antiquarian. His 1886 'Historical Sketch, Guide Book, and Prospectus of Cushing's Island' is the earliest sustained written history of the island and the primary source underlying most entries in this manual.

Sargent dedicated the book to 'all Portlanders, at home or abroad' at the centennial anniversary of the city, embodying 'one chapter of its municipal history.' His genealogical work on the Cushing family was printed separately in the Maine Historical & Genealogical Recorder, vol. II.
